These nursery pillows come in a few different animals and colors including a monkey, a bunny and a puppy, a baby giraffe, and an elephant. They are shaped in such a way that they can be carried around as well as being snuggled up with. These will be a perfect way to let a toddler feel comfortable and have a piece of home with them always.  It is small enough to take to grandma’s house, and big enough to easily snuggle with.

These pillows will last throughout childhood, providing a great snuggly comfort to any child.  These are recommended for children at least 6 months, as it is not a good idea to have pillows in a baby’s crib.  However, I think they would provide great tummy time for a smaller baby. So what is a personalized keepsake baby pillow? It can be thought of in a couple different ways. You can personalize a baby pillow with the baby’s name, date of birth, height and weight.  You can do this in a number of ways from embroidering, stenciling, using an applique.  The ideas are only limited by your creativity.

Creating a personalized monogrammed baby pillow is not too difficult and can be accomplished by even a beginning sewer. You can of course always look online and have one made for your if you aren’t up to trying it yourself.

Today I thought I’d show you how to create a very cute felt monogrammed pillow. Felt is available in all the fabric stores in a wide range of colors and designs. It does not ravel so it’s perfect for this type of project, and it’s really soft.

Here’s what you’re gonna need:

• felt for front of pillow (1/2 yard or less)
• stencils for monogram
• pillow form
• fabric to cover back of pillow (how much you need depends on the size of your pillow, but it’s usually less than half a yard.
• fabric for applique (less than a fat quarter)
• small piece of fusible interfacing for fabric applique (less than a fat quarter)

Some extra things that make it a little easier:

• glue stick for holding cut felt to fabric
• temporary fabric adhesive for holding pattern to felt
• hobby knife for cutting felt monogram

Now here’s what you’re gonna do.

1. Cut your felt to fit your pillow form. Cut and size the stencils you will be using. Adhere your stencils to the felt with some temporary adhesive. Make sure to attach your stencils to the “right” side of the felt.

2. Using a hobby knife or really sharp embroidery scissors cut out the insides of the monogram. This will leave you with your monogram in the felt.

3. Measure the height and width of the entire felt stencil.

4. Cut a piece of fabric approximately 1″ wider and longer than the size of the rectangle you measured above. Cut a piece of fusible interfacing 1/4″ smaller than the fabric.

5. Using an iron press the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

6. Apply glue stick to wrong side of felt around the letters.

7. Carefully lay the felt down on the fabric. Make sure all the cut outs on the felt are over fabric. Smooth and let the glue dry for a few minutes.

8. Sew around the letters. You can use a machine or do it by hand. It is nice to use contrasting or complimentary colored thread.

9. Turn the felt over, and carefully cut away the excess fabric. Make sure you don’t cut the felt.

Once you have gotten to this point you can follow these directions to make a baby pillow.

You can personalize a baby pillow in many ways.  How you decorate or personalize your baby pillow will be completely dependent on your personality and your style, as well as the style of the new mom who will be receiving this gift.

Remember infant pillows are meant to be decorative, since babies are not supposed to have pillows and blankets in their cribs.

When creating a personalized baby pillow you can do any number of things.

Embroidery:

You can embroider a baby pillow with the baby’s name, date of birth and weight.  Or if you want to give the gift before the birth you can find out what the theme of the nursery is and find a cute pattern to embroider on the pillow that will match the nursery.

Stencil:

You can find a beautiful stencil and using fabric paint stencil an image on the baby pillow.  This allows you to use a wide range of colors and designs.  With scrapbooking become so popular there are tons and tons of stencils available now, and some really cute ones too.

Photo Pillow:

This is a newer type of personalized pillow. You can take a photograph and have it put on a pillow, or a blanket for that matter.  You can use a picture of the mom while pregnant or you can wait until the baby is born and use the first family picture or pictures of the newborn. This is a very original gift.

Quilt PIllow:

You can also put together some quilt squares and then put them together as a pillow. This can be a nice gift for a whole family to work on.  Each family member could do a square and then they could all be put together. Don’t forget to write a special message on your square.

As you can see there are many options if you are choosing to create a personalized baby pillow. I hope you have gotten some good ideas and are excited about getting creative.

If you don’t know how to embroider you can easily learn or you can hire someone else to do the embroidering for you. You will need a few things to create your embroidered pillow. To begin you will need an embroidery hoop. They come in a variety of sizes, the smaller ones are much easier to manage, especially for beginners.

Secondly you will need to find a pattern. Depending on how you are going to personalize your baby pillow you can find patterns for letters, to add the baby’s name, as well as numbers for weight and birthdate. You can also get patterns for cute animals or just about any other design you can think of. You might want to check with the new parents and find out what the theme of the nursery is going to be. You could then make a personalized baby pillow to match the nursery.

You will also have to decide the colors for your project and get the appropriate colors of embroidery thread. Embroidery thread comes with more than one strand of thread together. Your pattern will tell you how many strands you are supposed to use for each part of the overall picture. If you only need two strands you just gently pull them apart. You will most likely begin with a strand of about 20 inches. This will give you enough thread and still be manageable.

You then embroider your design on the pillow. What material your pillow is made of is completely up to you. Many decorative pillows are made of satin, but you can find or make small pillows from any material you can find. Just remember your personalized baby pillow is more for decorative purposes as infants should not have pillows in their cribs.
